Aubergine-tomato-lentil stew

Ingredients

(serves 4 people)

Tools

🥘 1 big frying/wok pan
🥘 1 medium frying pan*

Nutritional Base

🥔 1kg gnocchi**
🍆 2-3 large eggplants
🌶️ 4-5 red bell peppers
🍅 6-8 tomatoes, OR 🥫 2 cans of peeled tomatoes (~500g)
🥫 2 cans of (soaked) lentils (~500g)

Extra Flavours

🫒 Plenty of (olive) oil
🧂 A decent amount of salt
🧅 2-3 large red onions
🧄 4-6 cloves of garlic
🌶️ 2-3 small dried chilli peppers
🌿 2-3 bay leaves
🌿 2 cinnamon sticks
🌿 Cumin, whole or powdered
🌿 Thyme, dried or fresh
🌿 Paprika powder
🍇 1-2 handfuls of raisins (optional)
🧃 Pomegranate syrup (agave syrup also works)

Tzatziki (optional)

🗑️ A grate
🗑️ A strainer
🥛 500g (plant-based) Greek-style yoghurt
🥒 1 cucumber
🧄 2-3 small cloves of garlic (or 1-2 big ones)
🌿 Dill, fresh or dried

Instructions

⏲️ 60-90 minutes

  1. 🔪 ← 🧅🧄🌶️
Cut the onion (in quartered slices), garlic (as small as you prefer) and dried chilli peppers (in small shreds).

  2. 🗑️ ← 🥛🥒🌿 (Optional)
If you're making the tzatziki, grate the cucumber and squeeze it dry with a strainer or a clean cloth, or even your hands. Mix it together with the yoghurt, dill and the raw extra garlic.

  3. 🥘 ← 🫒🧅🌶️🧂
Pour a liberal amount of olive oil in a big, cold frying/wok pan that you have a lid for. Add the onions, chilli and a pinch of salt. Let it all warm slowly on low heat. (Note: the oil should rise high enough to cover the onions)

  4. 🔪 ← 🍆🌶️
While the oil warms, cut the eggplants (in thick, quartered chunks - they will shrink!) and bell peppers (in rough, bite-sized chunks). Stir the onions every now and then.

  5. 🥘 ← 🧄🍆
After about 10-15 minutes, the oily onions should be fragrant and soft. Add the garlic and eggplant. Stir while evenly spraying the eggplant pieces with a decent amount of salt, then put the lid on the pan. Let the mixture simmer until the eggplant is soft and shrunk - stir occasionally.

  6. 🔪 ← 🍅
While the eggplant simmers, cut the (canned) tomatoes in rough, bite-sized chunks.

  7. 🥘 ← 🍅🌿
Add the tomatoes to the mixture, along with the bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, cumin, thyme and paprika powder. Put the lid back on, then let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes.

  8. 🍳 ← 🥔
While the mixture simmers, add (half of) the gnocchi to another frying pan with a little bit of olive oil, letting it bake on medium heat. Once the gnocchi turns crisp, taste it; if it's good, take it off the heat, and preferrably cover it up to keep it warm. Repeat for the other half of the gnocchi, unless your pan was big enough for all of it.

  9. 🥘 → 🎛️
Taste the sauce; add more spices and/or salt according to taste.

  10. 🥘 ← 🫘🍇
Drain the lentils, and add them to the mixture. If you like, add raisins as well. Let everything simmer for 2-3 more minutes.

  11. 🥘 ← 🧃
If the flavour and softness of the vegetables is to your liking, turn off the heat. Spray and stir some pomegranate syrup throughout the whole, according to taste.

  12. 🥘 + 🥔 + 🥛 = 🍽️
Serve with the gnocchi (and tzatziki). Eat tasty!

* You can also bake the gnocchi in the oven, instead of frying it in a pan. This does take considerably longer, so you may want to do this after step 3 or 4, then skip step 8.

** You can also replace the gnocchi with (pearl) couscous, bulgur or rice.

Low-effort, uninspired rice and beans

Ingredients

(serves 1 lazy bum for 2 meals)

Tools

🥘 1 cooking pan
🥘 1 small (frying) pan

Nutritional Base

🍚 1 cup of rice
🥫 1 can of white beans in tomato sauce

Optional Extras

🥬 2-3 handfuls of spinach (if you're feeling fancy)
🧅 1 large onion, OR 🌿 onion powder
🧄 1-2 cloves of garlic, OR 🌿 garlic powder
🌶️ 1 small dried chilli pepper
🍇 1-2 handfuls of raisins
🧀 A royal amount of nutritional yeast
🌿 Tajin

Instructions

⏲️ 18-20 minutes

  1. 🍚 ← 💧
Add 1 cup of rice and 1.5-2 cups of water to a pan. Your flat finger should *just* fit between the top of the rice and the surface of the water. Bring the rice to a boil, then leave it on minimal heat with a lid on top for 10 minutes.

  2. 🔪🍳 ← 🧅🧄🌶️🥬 (Optional)
If you're using onion, garlic or chilli, chop and add to a small (frying) pan on low heat with a bit of oil. Let it simmer for a few minutes. Add spinach if you fancy.

  3. 🍳 ← 🥫
Toss the white beans in tomato sauce in the (frying) pan, slowly heating it. If you want, add onion powder, garlic powder and/or raisins at this point.

  4. 🍚 → 🧯
After the rice has softly boiled for 10 minutes, turn off the heat and let it sit for another 8-10 minutes. Afterwards, the rice should have absorbed all the water.

  5. 🍚 + 🥫 = 🍽️
    Time to eat.
Optionally serve with nutritional yeast or Tajin.

My first Android port

I've started progress on porting 10 Steps Ahead, an arcade game I made as a school project in 2020.

Before

After

It's still missing some content and menus, but the game itself can be fully played as intended!
Notable improvements include an improved spawning algorithm that rewards strategy, making games last longer if you use powerups optimally and make the totem waste its attacks. In other words: your success now relies more on skill than on RNG.

I've also implemented a daily seed, meaning you can retry the same level layout an infinite number of times on the same day. You can submit your daily highscore to the global leaderboard, which resets every day.

If you trust me, you can download it here ;) the internet permission is for connecting you to the global leaderboard only.

P.S. Keep Android Open!!! I do not plan on releasing any apps through Google's monopolistic app ecosystem. If not for my personal future in app development, fight back for your own right to use and modify your phone as YOU please!

My new website!!!

A new home for the things I make and do :)

Besides showcasing my projects, I'll be treating this website as a little social media experiment, where I'll be trying out some new(?) forms of staying in touch through the internet.

If you'd like to join me in this experiment, feel free to (at some point) subscribe to my (currently non-functional) personal mailing list. Which would mean: me sending you an email every now and then about things I worked on, cool new games / albums / recipes I discovered, my newest hyperfixation, pictures of my cats, a compilation of random shower thoughts... things like that.

While I do realise personal websites are not as relevant as they used to be - especially as a form of social media - I'm curious and stubborn enough to give it a shot anyway. If anything, I'll have a dedicated little echo chamber for my niche hobby projects ;)
